Animations can be used in a variety of ways with students at VELS Level 4. They can be used to engage, explain and encourage students to be active within their learning enviroment. Animations can be developed by the teacher to enhance the content they will teach and arouse student interest in the topic. Animations can also be developed by the students to show their growing understandings of key concepts within the unit of work. Such teaching and learning activities can be utilised very well in "cross curriculum" activities consistent with the 5E Instructional Model.
Here are some examples:
This animation we developed as a group to be used as a teaching tool in the classroom. The animation relates to the causes and effects of volcanic eruptions.
This animation we found on Youtube. We liked the way the video described volcanic eruptions in song and thought this would engage the students.

This Wiki has been developed to house a variety of resources for teachers to use when teachingTo see this page larger, hover over the topic of Natural Disastersimage with your mouse and more specifically Volcanoes.
The resources that are included have been developed and are to be used for students working withinclick the VELS (Victorian Essential Learning Standards) level 4 and who are investigating the way volcanoes are formed, how they erupt and what the causes and effects are.
Importantly such resources can be used inconjunction with the 5E Instructional Model, which is a sequencial teaching model where learners build or construct new ideas on top of their existing ideas. A key to the model is for students to form concepts by participating in "hands on" experiences. Finally, the model assists teachers in implementing an integrated curriculum into the classroom.

Suggested VELS domains to incorporate into this unit of work are; Science (studying volcanoes), ICT (animations, Wikipedia, blogging, Wallwisher), Design, Creativity and Technology (design and create a volcano), English (the producing of literacy products to explain understandings).'view full size' button.
